IMG_8601What is a graded landscape crosstie and why doneed to know?

The grade is the condition of it. The grade denotes the amount of wear, structural integrity, and overall looks of the crosstie. The grades ranges from relay all the way to recyclable hog fuel. The use of the crosstie determines the grade that is needed. Continue reading to determine what you need for the job.

Railroad Relay generally less than ten year old and like new condition.

Landscape Relay has little to no wear on all four sides. The ends of Landscape Relays are square with possible hair line cracks or splits.

Landscape #1 can have up to a finger width depth of plate wear. The ends of a Landscape #1 can have a finger width split.

Landscape #2 can have up to a two finger width depth of plate wear. The ends of a Landscape #2 can have up to a two finger width split.

Landscape #3 can contain some rot, but can still be used for bordering and Landscaping purposes. Some are old, yet still have good structure.

Recyclable Hog Fuel grade is the remaining  scrap crossties. It has significant amounts of rot and it is nonstructural.
